Introducing reminders to improve the frequency of vital measuremnts

The problem

A team of highly skilled designers devised an elegant solution to monitor crucial health metrics like respiratory rate and heart rate. Despite this innovative tool, some users were failing to measure these vital signs frequently or consistently, rendering the data collected unusable for healthcare professionals. That's where I came in, implementing a system of reminders to assist users in comprehending the overall picture of their health and keep them on track with their monitoring routine.

The Process & Team

As the sole UX designer on the project, I collaborated closely with a project manager to gather requirements and examined existing user research and pain points to devise a set of wireframes for testing. The wireframes were then reviewed and approved by a UX manager at Google, who provided valuable oversight and guidance throughout the process. With their approval, we proceeded with the testing phase and ultimately moved forward with development based on the results.

Designing entry points for users

To design effective reminders, there were several key considerations that I had to take into account. First, I needed to provide users with clear entry points to add new reminders. To achieve this, I decided to include a reminder section in the settings, which would allow users to add, edit or delete reminders at any time.

In addition, I recognized the importance of making it easy for users to create reminders in the moment, immediately after taking a vital measurement. To facilitate this, I implemented a reminder icon located in the top right corner that appears after a measurement has been taken.

How to set a reminder

When designing the reminder feature, several considerations were taken into account:

  • Frequency of repetition (daily, weekly, etc.)

  • Option to set start and end dates or keep the reminder running indefinitely

  • Monthly reminders set on the 31st will repeat on the last day of the month

  • Ability for users to enable or disable notifications.

How reminders appear on ‘home’

Reminders appear as chips under the halo on the home screen. It was important they were accessible but didn’t interfere with the remainder of the experience.

Other considerations included:

  • Reminders do not have a set time therefore will appear when the user opens google fit on the set day

  • If the user does not action the chip it will appear for one day only before it disappears

Actions on chips:

  • Users can press close to remove reminders from the home screen

  • Pressing a chip will launch the measurement sequence

Final thoughts

Whilst working at Beyond I was contracted to Google for 1 year where I worked on many projects including the Fitbit app that was taken over by Google. This is one piece of work I did that went live in early 2022 and is still an existing feature today that is used by 100 million+ users.
